Being an advocate of the ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ hypothesis (mainly as I’m a moody cow without some morning sustenance), I was keen to investigate an eatery that quite frankly had been on my radar for a while. Slightly tucked away on Woodville Road in Cardiff (although you will find it purely from the canary yellow exterior), The Early Bird Artisan Bakery and Café is one of those places that you can walk into and feel at home immediately.
It has an eclectic feel; a large blackboard dominates one wall, while Polaroid photos and various plates and mirrors (which wouldn’t have looked out of place in my Nan’s living room), adorn the rest of the white washed walls. Combine that with comfortable seating, cushions, the mouthwatering aroma of cooked breakfast, freshly brewed coffee and rather more strangely, 70’s background music (got to love a bit of Chaka Khan in the morning!) – let’s just say if I hadn’t been in a rush, I would have been happy to make myself an Early Bird type nest in the corner and kick back for a few hours.
Now a little unknown fact about me, I’m a bit of a ‘Wriggler’ – no that doesn’t mean I can’t sit still for 5 minutes at a time…but if you haven’t come across it before, I can highly recommend taking a look at Wriggle. While I don’t want to deviate too much from the awesomeness of the Early Bird breakfast – this website is definitely worth checking out. They regularly have exclusive deals for eating out and drinking in independent restaurants, cafés and bars in Cardiff, and are a great way to find some little gems that you’ll enjoy re-visiting time and time again.
Needless to say with my Wriggle code in hand for a Full Bakers Breakfast and an Americano – an absolute bargain at £4.95 instead of £8.50, I was keen to check out the offer!
While I am not a die hard coffee drinker, I don’t mind the odd cup – especially if it turns out to be as good as the Early Bird’s Americano (apparently they roast their own beans in their bread oven). And with my caffeine intake gratefully boosted, it is literally a few minutes later before what I can only describe as a brekkie feast is placed in front of me.
Bakers Breakfast | A feast of Welsh pork sausage, crispy bacon (the way I like it!), sautéed mushrooms with homemade baked beans and poached egg. Served with two chunky slices of their own organic sourdough toast.
To be honest I’m still surprised it fitted on the plate, let alone that I manage to finish it all! It is a tasty breakfast, although stand out elements are the poached egg – fresh, beautifully cooked and with a hint of vinegar lingering. And being a sucker for freshly made bread, I could demolish a few more slices of the sourdough toast!
Consequently, in conclusion and support of the original hypothesis of ‘breakfast being the most important meal’, I leave The Early Bird:
- Gloriously full;
- With a fluffy, caffeine-related buzz going on;
- In a much better and chilled out mood, than when I had arrived;
- Stuck with ‘I’m Every Woman’ and ‘Blame It On The Boogie’ in my head for the rest of the day. Ha ha!
I rest my case…
- Even without my Wriggle code, I certainly would have paid full price for this breakfast – great value for money both in terms of quantity and quality.
- The team were so polite and friendly – considering it was 9am (and they had already been open for an hour).
- If you can’t manage a visit to The Early Bird, you can quite often find them at many of the Street Food events. More recently I caught up with them at the Street Food Circus in Roath Yard, and purchased this pot of doughnut deliciousness with warm cinnamon apples, salted caramel and candied walnuts…I really don’t think I need to say anything else…
Would I go again?
Yes, their brunch offering looks very appealing – whether it’s the ‘Hulk Smaasssshhhh’ with smashed avocado on toast, poached egg and chipotle sauce, to a ‘Dixieland Delight’ of crispy bacon and maple syrup…yum!
Would I recommend The Early Bird?
Definitely – although it’s worth noting that we visited at 9am and it was relatively quiet. However based on other reviews, I’m guessing it is very popular and you may need to wait for a table (well worth the wait though!).
The brunch menu is served from 10am-4pm, and available to view on The Early Bird’s Facebook page.
